How it is calculated
Each category has a base unit: meters for length, kilograms for mass, square meters for area and liters for volume. Every other unit has a fixed factor against that base unit.
Conversion factors
- Length: 1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 ft = 12 in; 1 yd = 3 ft; 1 mi = 1,609.344 m.
- Mass: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg; 1 oz = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g.
- Area: 1 pyeong = 400/121 m² ≈ 3.305785 m². Pyeong is a Korean area unit. 1 ha = 10,000 m²; 1 ac = 4,046.8564224 m².
- Volume: US liquid measures are used: 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L; 1 US qt = 1/4 US gal; 1 US pt = 1/8 US gal; 1 US cup = 236.5882365 mL; 1 US fl oz = 1/128 US gal.
- Results are displayed to up to eight decimal places. Very small values use scientific notation.
- Zero and negative values are converted too. Converting between identical units returns the input value.
- Temperature is not included because it requires an offset as well as a factor.

3. A US recipe
One US cup is 236.5882365 mL. A 200 mL Korean measuring cup is a different amount.

42.195 km is about 26.218757 mi. One international mile is exactly 1.609344 km.
